Sports voluntarism revived in Kaunas, „Train with Brain” Erasmus+ Sports project

Sports volunteering was revived again this past week as sports volunteers from all over Europe gathered in Kaunas, Lithuania to share some experiences and practically volunteer in the just ended Euroleague Basketball game. Kaunas became a city of delight as sports volunteers engaged in several tasks like creating a new sports game and other beneficial workshops in sports. Teenagers of today overlook the essence of grassroots sports and physical activity and this has led to several health and societal problems. At the same time, sports volunteering is still an undervalued concept, especially in post-soviet countries.

To jointly tackle these problems, 6 sports-oriented organizations from Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia, Greece and Italy are carrying out a project – “Train with Brain” (TwB) that would take the opportunity to reaffirm the importance of grassroots sports & sports volunteering in an international environment. The main objective of the project is to promote voluntary activities in sport, together with social inclusion, equal opportunities and awareness of the importance of health-enhancing physical activity through grassroots sports. With this in mind, volunteers and team leaders from different European countries gathered in Kaunas, Lithuania, for a 5 day intensive training. It took place from the 19th of March to the 25th of March 2017 and there were 18 vibrant participants involved.

What makes this project unique, essential and standout was the blend of both theoretical and practical aspects that gave participants the opportunity to try out what they learnt as volunteers. They had the opportunity to put smiles on the faces of fans at Zalgiris arena during the Euroleague Basketball game, where they worked tirelessly to make the arena’s corridors activations & games for the fans successful.

Before the game, the participants had the opportunity to brainstorm for the Euroleague Basketball game as a team and came up with outstanding ideas that keept the fans happy during the breaks of the games (i.e. dribble contest, face paint, table football tournament etc.). Also, the well-structured project engaged the youth to become sports ambassadors in their respective counties.

Seasoned guest speakers on sports volunteering also graced the occasion with their presence and presentations on several topics like “Volunteering in youth camps’’ and “Best sports practices based on EU Polices”. The creative skills of participants were also outdoored as they came up with exciting new sports games like Passball, Europe treasure hunt and Flyball. These games were tried and they followed the EU sports policies like fairness, respect, drug-free, etc.

The idea of this training exchange was to serve as a platform to train participants who will also serve as volunteers during the adolescent camp scheduled for August this year. The given areas that were covered included: 1) the essence of sports volunteering. 2) Sports as a tool for healthy living. 3) Creating a new sports for kids. 4) Sports volunteering as a tool to promote social inclusion, multiculturalism and equal opportunities for all. 5) Guidebook for organizing sports camps for adolescents

The project was a great success in terms of experiences gained and information acquired, as well as satisfaction of the participants. This can be verified by the testimonials given by the participants and guest speakers like:

I am ready to change the world through volunteering

- Athina, Greece

Lets encourage kids to do sports

- Carlos, Team Leader

I really learnt a lot from the awesome project

- Barbara, Italy

As a guest speaker, I am more than confident these trained volunteers would change the world through sports volunteering

- Gabrielė, Lithuania

Besides, knowledge assessments done by every participant on the first and the last day of the exchange have shown an increase of almost 50% on average in the knowledge of sports volunteering.

The camp will concentrate on 6 different grassroot sports (Basketball, Football, Taekwondo, Frisbee Golf, Cricket) as well as non-formal education lessons on sports subjects. It will be suited for girls and boys to mingle together in an international environment, communicate and learn from each other. In total 30 underprivileged young participants (aged 12-15) from Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia, Greece and Italy will join the camp. 12 sports volunteers will help with the coordination of the camp. The activity will be hosted in Lithuania, on August 1-10, 2017.
